Alternate timelines

These are ordered dimensions that are physically very similar to Universe-1 but where historical events are different.

There are many theories about what causes alternate timelines to spring up, none of which have been definitively proven. One popular theory is the many-worlds interpretation of quantum physics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Many_worlds_hypothesis), which roughly speaking posits a new timeline for every possible way every quantum-mechanical event might have gone.

What is known for certain is that:

• Alternate timelines exist, and travel between them is possible.
• Attempts at changing history within a timeline will not succeed. Instead, they spawn off an alternate timeline with the appropriate differences. Which is close enough, if all you want to do is live in a universe like that... but your home timeline will keep on going, unaffected.
• The future is not fixed. It is possible to foresee the future, but the effect is exactly the same as travel into the past -- a new timeline is created in which your precognition occurred. It might, or might not, progress the same way as the future you saw.

Some known alternate timelines include Universe 1050, Universe 1102, and Universe 1103.
