Description

As Godling: You might think someone with such a pretentious name as Godling might have a flashy a costume, but actually it's a rather dull affair of grey body armor on top of a basic body suits of a darker grey, with only a two-tone abstract blue emblem on the chest to break the monotony. A mask covers the face but for green eyes. The wearer is over 6 foot and generally stands stiffly erect.

When he uses his powers, space seems to bend slightly around a blue crackling energy directed from his hands.

As Brian: Bryan Dyers stands 6'1", at least when erect, but he tends to stoop, making him look older than his 40 years. Both long face and body have a sagging, mournful aspect to them, and even his greying moustache droops. The parting of his grey hair is widening.

He typically dresses in a dress shirt and tie with a brown jacket and trousers, but these too are rumpled and look like they haven't seen an iron in months. His shoes are scuffed and unpolished. He speak in an English accent in a rather monotonous voice.

Origin

There are gods, and then there are gods. But even those gods that build new dimensions in weeks and tear them apart in wars in days can fall in love with each other, though they be enemies; can have children. And so it was that a certain goddess had to hide her child from friend and foe alike, in some backwater dimension no one ever visited. She was lucky enough to find a planet where the mortals often themselves manifest strange powers, where an infant god might hide and pass unremarked. She bound the baby to be incarnated as a series of these mortals, until such time as he grew strong enough to break free of his nursery and claim his birthright. That was three centuries ago.

Brian Dyers is only the second incarnation to learn he had powers at all, and he was content to keep them a secret. He was fairly content with his dull government job, his choral singing, his pottering in the garden, his vacations in Italy, and above all with his prettyish wife and two children. Until the time he came home from a particularly frustrating day at work and found his wife and daughter brutally murdered. He found the animal that did it, and when he was done not an atom of the murderer remained. Then the remorse hit.

Brian made himself two promises that day: than he would never kill again, and that he would never again sit idle while animals like that ran free in the world. He couldn't bear to live in his home any more, so, knowing that Colonial Bay would be a place where he could learn what he needed to bring down these animals, he moved there with his son.

Powers

Brian is a god, but still a baby one: it may be millions of years till he reaches maturity, and he doesn't even yet even have continuity of consciousness from one incarnation to the next, though his choice of name shows his subconscious is catching on. His powers show as a crackling blue warping light to sight and sound, but to mystic senses are loud: he's not just bending physical laws about him, he's obliterating them, overwriting them, with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. However, he can do this only a very small scale. He can destroy matter with a thought, or reshape it with a bit more effort (these transformations can be reversed by other gods, though generally they only do so if one of the sincerely faithful asks them to do so), or temporarily remove the space between where he is and where he wants to be. Being subtle is harder. He's learnt the trick of making himself some armor, of creating bonds around someone, and of disrupting targets without disintegrating them. Easier than full transformations are transitory editings of an area (Images). His only truly subtle trick is hovering in mid-air by partially ignoring gravity.

All godlings are naturally immune to transformations and the like, or they'd hurt themselves, have minds difficult for mortals to affect deeply, and can perceive directly the patterns underlying the universe (though is takes Brian some effort to transcend his mortal senses).

Personality

Brian has been grim and bitter since his wife and daughter's deaths. In private life, he seems grieving and resigned; as Godling he seems determined and unrelenting, unless he loses his temper: then he burns with a cold and spiteful rage.

Brian's goals are to raise his son in safety and to stop animals like his wife's killer, generalised to all violent criminals. He knows he is still a novice at crimefighting and is trying to learn. His son Dan is a weak point: he's pretty sure Dan is not as upstanding a young man as might be desired, but he's still inclined to take Dan's side in a dispute.

Relations

Brian's family are his parents (retired to Spain), two more successful brothers (with whom he finds he has little in common any more), his in-laws (who have no more to do with him since Kate's death, blaming him for not protecting her), and his son Dan, who has become rebellious under his overprotectiveness and hangs out with dubious friends. He made few friends in Colonial Bay; even among the heroes, only Barricade had much to do with him; worse, he has an enmity with Eleven. It seems unlikely, given his moody nature, that he is doing much better since he transferred to London.

History

Brian moved to Colonial Bay in early 2056 (taking an office job) and established himself as an independent superhero, but went down poorly with both the public and the superhero community, who tended to regard him as stand-offish, aloof, and pretentious. Matters turned worse when Eleven caught his son dealing drugs: the resultant misunderstanding led to flared tempers and Eleven being turned into a rabbit for a while, further alienating Godling from the hero community. Only Barricade seemed very willing to give him a chance, inviting him to join Starguard Gamma.

Thus isolated, Godling continued to be ineffective. He became obsessed with stopping the dealing of Twist then rampant in the city, but for all his efforts made no progress. When an opportunity arose to transfer to the London branch of Starguard, he took it, feeling a second fresh start was called for.
