Description
As Spirit: This man...assuming that's what it is...stands about five and a half feet tall. His body glows constantly, giving off light...in fact he appears to be made of pure light, or some other kind of energy. No facial features can really be made out. There's no clothing on the figure...but then again, there's nothing that seems offensive that's visible, either.
He almost looks angelic...the glowing body, the slightly disembodied voice...but there are no wings.
As Dorian Perrault: This man stands about five and a half feet tall, and is moderately good looking. He has blue eyes...brown hair cut into a crew cut, and a goatee. He's currently wearing a retro Eisenhower style jacket in an olive green, along with a black t-shirt, a pair of jeans...probably Levi's if one notices such things, and a pair of navy blue Doc Marten's, heavily worn from walking, apparently.
As Syphon: This man stands about five and a half feet tall, but is quite shocking to look at. He looks like a character from a horror movie...like "Jacob's Ladder". He has no hair to speak of...no eyebrows, or hair on his head, or even on any part of his body that's currently visible. His skin is a bleached white color, and his eyes are solid white, like someone removed the pupils. His mouth, nose and ears have been covered by skin, giving his face a look like he's always wearing a mask made up of his own skin. His voice is muffled a little bit by the skin over it. His clothing is much less revolting to look at. He's currently wearing a maroon long sleeve dress shirt with a nehru collar on it, a pair of jeans...probably Levi's if one notices such things, and a pair of navy blue Doc Marten's, heavily worn from walking, apparently.
Origin
Dorian Perrault had been well on his way toward becoming a full fledged nuclear physicist. He was a doctoral candidate at Penn State (where he had also done his undergraduate work and competed on the wrestling team), having finished enough work to walk away with a Masters degree if he had chosen to do so. Part of his work involved acting as a technical assistant at a fission reactor facility in Nigeria.
During the test of a couple of new isotopes, something went horribly wrong. The containment units failed, and radiated gas started to fill the compartmentalized lab. Dorian attempted to dive out of the lab before the lead shielding came down, only to fall short, slamming into the wall as it slid into place. The radiation had a profound effect on his body as his skin melted in several areas, his hair fell out, and his very physiology and chemistry changed. All the while the primary investigator for the lab was frantically trying to deal with the problems, knowing that one of his students was trapped in there. The radiation had changed Dorian's body chemistry to the point where he became a living energy storage cell...but the pain had been too great, and he started smashing the interior of the lab, lashing out in pain, crushing everything he could manage to. It took the combined effort of several local superheroes to restrain him, since the accident allowed him to absorb their attacks, and also made him considerably more resilient than he had been previously. The local brick, Warhead, felt firsthand his own kinetic force being redirected back at him through Dorian's newfound strength. To the researcher's dismay, the instrumentation had been damaged to such a degree that it was nearly impossible to try to recreate what occurred.
Criminal charges against Dorian for the destruction of the lab were dropped, and he entered counseling. Now on a relatively even keel, he has moved to Colonial Bay to try to restart his life, with the help of his department head at the school, who got him a job doing offsite programming for a consulting firm.
His advisor, Phil Barker, helped him get set up as a hero in the Colonial Bay area, where he went by the name of Syphon, as his powers all involved absorbing energy. He served admirably for two years...helping put numerous villains behind bars. Finally, one villain, Yellow Jacket of the Stingers, apparently had unhinged...blaming Syphon for the failings in her life. During an attack on Starguard...Yellow Jacket tore apart Syphon's body with an energy beam, releasing his internal energy. His body had died, but his consciousness remained. Shortly after this, Bilbo, Starguard's resident super-intelligent monkey, realized what might have happened to Dorian, and set about to create an energy collector to grab Dorian's consciousness, and put it into a robot. He succeeded...partially. He grabbed part of Dorian's psyche...the darker recesses of his personality. The remainder was left to reform on its own...
Powers
As Syphon, he was a living power battery. He could absorb energy, and either channel it into his strength or fire beams of energy. As a side effect of the accident, he no longer needed to breathe, eat, or even sleep, as his body lived off of only energy.
As Spirit, he's now a being of pure energy, and can manipulate his energy to attain a wide variety of effects, including blasts of energy, holograms, illusions, telekinesis, generating light, and creating deflector shields. He also now has the ability to fly...and can fly in space.
Personality
Dorian has a split personality...literally. The experience of 'dying' caused his energy to dissipate, and come back together eventually. But, in the meantime, Bilbo, the wonder monkey, realized that Dorian/Syphon had merely dispersed...and needed to be recollected, and put in another body. So, he went about doing that...and collected some of the energy, and part of Dorian's personality. But..the majority of his personality wasn't gathered...and coalesced into Spirit when by force of will, he was able to reform a body. This Dorian is no longer vengeful...and doesn't even want to be human again. Gone is the angst. He's now dedicated to justice, and adamant about not killing. He still has a dislike of nuclear power...but not to the extent that he did previously. All in all, he's closer to the 'square jawed' type of hero that he always wanted to be.
Relations
Before moving to Colonial Bay: Mike Platt (a friend from college) is a programmer, and a former wrestling teammate. Rick Bennett (a friend from college) is a civil engineer who's currently serving in the army. His family has moved to upstate New York, near Albany, and he keeps in touch with them. Both of his parents are still alive, and worry about him a lot. Phil Barker, his old advisor, is still a friend.
Since arriving in Colonial Bay: Wasp is a teammate and good friend, who always served as an example of what a hero should be like. Fortitude is one of the first heroes that Dorian met in town. He has apparently left town. He became friends with Random Factor during his time with Starguard. Zeal Zudares is the daughter of a powerful businessman in Colonial Bay. She was one of the few 'normal' people who always treated him well. He had struck up a relationship of sorts with Zeal, and it looks like they may be heading toward marriage. Black Mamba is a fellow member in the Spirit of Justice, sponsored for membership by Spirit himself. It's unclear exactly why Spirit did this, but the other team members trusted his judgement. The reason for Spirit's friendship with this former villain is still unknown. Richard Chamberlain is the current District Attorney in Colonial Bay. He's the only government official that Spirit seems to be on very good terms with. He met Dr. Tilbury during his investigations into MAMBA, and the two seemed to have enough in common that they became friends.
History
Dorian has a fairly long history in the Colonial Bay area, spanning several years at this point. As Syphon, he fought alongside Fortitude and Wasp consistently, using his scientific knowledge nearly as often as his brawn. He managed to get a reputation as a relatively hot-headed sort of hero, one that never worried about his personal safety, always diving straight into a fray. This is probably because there were very few things that could actually hurt him at the time.
He has won the Best of the Best competition in the past, and has been a runner-up in that competition more than once. He met his current fiancee, Zeal Zudares, during the first of these competitions he participated in.
Nearly every villain in the know would know who he is, as he was the leader of a supergroup, and has appeared in the media several times in the last few years. He has a few real enemies, but they're all quite dangerous. It's safe to call MAMBA an enemy at this point, due to his meddling in their affairs. Additionally, he's had a number of run-ins with the Deadly Stingers, most notably with Yellow Jacket. She apparently views him as similarly scarred, but too well-adjusted...so she wants to kill him for being happy, when she is not, with a similar deformity. It's unclear what she thinks now that she believed that she killed Syphon. She has not been seen since Dorian publicly reappeared as Spirit. She's the closest to a real nemesis that he has, though.
